This is the garlic-lover's garlic.  Powerful and hot, Romanian red can be distinguished from other garlics by its strong garlic smell.  Quite hot when eaten raw, it takes on a nutty taste (still hot) when cooked.  Cloves are large so good for cooking whole or chopped to flavor any dish.

Type: Hardneck

Avg. Cloves per Bulb: 4 to 6 large cloves

Heat and Taste: Raw, this garlic is pungent and very hot with lingering aftertaste. When cooked, the taste takes on a nutty flavor.

Shipping

We ship only within the lower 48 states.

Please note that due to allium quarantine regulations
(designed to protect the onion industry) we are not allowed to ship seed stock
garlic (the large size) to the following counties in Idaho and Oregon:

Idaho:
Ada, Bingham, Blaine, Boise, Bonneville, Canyon, Cassia, Elmore, Gem, Gooding,
Jefferson, Jerome, Lincoln, Madison, Minidoka, Owyhee, Payette, Power, Twin
Falls, and Washington

Oregon:

Bulb Sizes

We sell our garlic in two sizes: large and medium/small.  Typically, larger bulbs are used as seed stock and the medium/small bulbs (“culinary garlic”) are for eating.  However, they all taste equally great and cooking with the larger cloves is a treat so feel free to try them!

About Our Garlic

Our garlic is hand planted in October, just before the snow begins to fall.  We use raised beds with soil from the ranch
fortified with our own compost and organic fertilizer (See https://keeneorganics.com/product/garlicfertilizer/).  The garlic, bedded with straw, spends the winter under heavy snow and emerges first thing after snow melt (typically
April).  For the hardneck varieties,
scapes are harvested in June (see https://www.chatelaine.com/food/garlic-scapes-faq/).  If you’ve not tried garlic scapes you must – they are a real treat.  Check back with us in May to order – they go quickly.
The garlic bulbs are harvested in late July or early August, depending on the year.  They are hung to dry for several weeks, cleaned and trimmed by hand, and then are ready for shipping for you to enjoy!
